My IIM Indore IPM Interview Experience - AIR 30 tells his Interview Experience
IIM INDORE INTERVIEW
Profile: Fresher;
93% in 10th and 94% in 12th (Commerce + Applied
mathematics)
Date: 1 August
2022
Time: 9 a.m.
Mode: Online
I was given
the very first slot of the first day hence I was one of the first candidates to
be interviewed. I joined the meet at 9 a.m. and there were several people in
the meeting room. Our attendance was taken and then we were told to wait in the
online lobby. This was a terrifying period as at any moment they could just let
me in and the interview would start and hence I had to stay prepared. Finally
after 45 minutes of staring the screen the interviewers let me in. There were two
panelists one Male (M) and one Female (F) who turned out to be my Calculus Professor
Mrs. Aekta Aggarwall. The interview then went as follows
Me: Good Morning Sir, Good Morning Mam.
I hope I am audible
M took the
lead
M (looking
at some paper): Hello Prakhar you are from Indore right?
Me: Yes Sir
M : So tell
me which school did you go to ?
Me: Told him about my school (NDPS).
He then
dropped the topic and jumped straight to questions.
M: So tell me what is going on Sri
Lanka?
Me (super
confident as I had read about it) : Explained how there is a financial crisis and
country is in a state of turmoil.
M (looking Satisfied) : What about Bangladesh?
Me (I wasn’t entirely sure) : They are
also facing a economic crisis.
M: Yes but
what are the reasons?
Me: I am not entirely sure.
M: What about Pakistan?
Me: * Told how there is political crisis
and made some foolish points from AAJ TAK.
M: So have you
heard about MiG 21?
Me (completely
shocked as this wasn’t at all what I expected) : I believe its name of one of
India’s fighter jets.
M (not
looking satisfied) : Hmm..Alright Do you know what is *some random name which I
don’t remember* (it was a missile defense system.
Me (trying
to stay calm) : I believe it’s a missile.
M (in a
intimidating tone): Do you know Indian missiles are named after the 5 elements
of Earth.
Me: Yes Sir
M: Then how
can this be name of some missile.
Me: Sir I am
not sure this is a missile, but it is related to defense.
M (not
looking satisfied): Anyways let’s move on. You had commerce in you +2 right?
(I nod)
M: So, tell me
what are the major exports which India does.
Me: Wheat and Pulses, I think.
M (looking disappointed): No. He went
on to ask one or two more practical questions from economics which I couldn’t
answer perfectly.
M (almost hostile) : Didn’t you study
them in your class 12.
Me(in self-defense mode): I am sorry sir
this topic is from MicroEco which I studied in class 11 which I am not able to
recall.
M: Well, it was just one year back. If
you continue this even in IIM then what is the use of you coming to this college
and wasting your money and efforts.
(At this point
I was pretty sure I have ruined my interview, but then remembered an advice I
got during one my mock interviews that professors sometimes deliberately act in
a aggressive way to check your temper, also I had watched a interview of a Prof.
there who said the same. I will attach the link; This gave me some hope and I looked
myself in the camera and made sure I had a smile on my face and looked
confident.)
Me (Calmly) : No sir I assure this will
not happen if I get in and also I will make sure to look up the answer to these
questions.
M (still looking unsatidfied): Alright
that’s it from my side.
F (suddenly taking over) : Hello
Prakhar So you had Maths in your class 11 and 12. Right?
ME: No mam I
had applied Mathematics.
F then asked
the difference between the two which I explained.
F: So you had functions right? (I nod)
So tell the difference between relation and function?
Me: Explained
F: Does Convex lens forms a function?
Me (who had no idea what that meant) :
Mam I was a commerce student.
F: So, what
convex lens was taught in class 10th.
Me: Tried to
answer the question by drawing the graph. Which I showed her and she said it was
right. After this I said that I believe it is a function but I am not sure.
But she kept
grilling me and told me to answer the question surely using the definition I
gave her.
In the end I
said it is a function.
F nodded but did not seem satisfied.
F: that’s all
from my side. You may leave.
I wasn’t given a chance to ask a question.
Overall, the
interview was around 12-15 minutes. The interviews were very grilling and tried
to intimidate me a lot. In the end I was almost sure I had messed up the
interview, but due a interview I watched of a prof. (https://youtu.be/-oIc93DDEeA).
I still had hope that they might me testing my temper.
And as it turned
out I WAS RIGHT. Not only did I get a final call but also got a good rank. (AIR
30).
So my advice
be to stay calm during the interview and answer questions which you know. Also
if you partially know a answer and are trying to figure it out you should do
that by speaking and showing them the method you are using. They are ultimately
trying to check your approach.
